About BorderLight 2022: Re-Emerging to Connect

Welcome back! It is with great pride that we build our 2022 Festival to illuminate the borders that divide us and foster reciprocal connections between Cleveland and the global community, especially as we move out of this period of isolation. After the last two years, we all deserve a jolt from the normal, and artists deserve a platform for their work. BorderLight will remain anchored in downtown Cleveland, in venues from Playhouse Square to Public Square, making the festival accessible to visitors from across the city and beyond. We will be thoughtful as we plan our 2022 Festival to make sure the safety of our patrons, artists, staff, and volunteers is foremost.

Help BorderLight Bring the Production of Khuraki to Cleveland!

This summer, the BorderLight Festival is collaborating with a team of recently resettled Afghan refugees to present Khūrākī.

“Khūrākī” is a culinary theatrical event originally created by Molly Rice and Real Time Interventions in collaboration with a group of recently-resettled Afghan refugees in Pittsburgh. In this new version, female Afghan refugees from Cleveland will cook traditional cuisines inviting audience members to enjoy delicious, home-cooked Afghan food as part of every performance.

This project provides Afghan women who love to cook a chance to connect with Clevelanders, share their culture, and possibly find a pathway to work. The end goal is to make the women of Cleveland's Afghan refugee population feel welcomed into their greater community, and you can help!

  • $150 Pays for 5 hours of translator's skills

  • $60 Helps pay for an Afghan cook for 3 hours

  • $25 Helps to support the rental of Old Stone Church in Cleveland

  • $15 Helps support talkbacks where audience members can learn how to be a community sponsor

  • $5 Buys the food for an Afghan homecooked meal
