SHOW SYNOPSIS & details
as submitted by the artist(s)
New But Familiar is a piece about what it means to suddenly have the realization, and to carry the resulting responsibility, of being a queer elder, and what it means to choose to stay. A piece about grappling with identity, it begins as a traditional toy theatre piece as a memory is reenacted with Kamishibai-style backdrops & small paper puppets. As this memory moves into the present moment, the cardboard box stage transforms into a crankie. As we imagine the future, it is told through light and shadow. The ending is one of hope and promise. If we can rewrite our past, we can also reinvent our future. What a gift to be an aging queer.
